abstract

The current generation of hot end turbine blade materials and coatings for Tyne RMIC and Olympus TM3B perform most satisfactorily under normal conditions of service. In general the overall picture is optimistic and the Royal Navy does not consider there is any fundamental requirement to upgrade these systems. With the introduction of the Spey SMIA into Fleet service and the current uprating programme for the 18MW SMIC, the need for materials research has not diminished. Both of these engines are designed for long life so the search continues for blade materials and coatings which will give enhanced creep life and corrosion resistance.

This paper looks at the performance of turbine blade materials and coatings in service and reports on early experience with SM1A.
