abstract

The contact mechanics of Knee prosthetic implant is considered in which the surface roughness of the implant is included. The study involves a contact mechanics model of the rough surfaces. Free and forced vibration of the prosthetic components are considered when subject to a constant compressive force. The finding shows that both contact damping and contact natural frequency relate to the nominal geometrical properties as well as micron scale surface roughness of the prosthetic component. The micron scale surface roughness parameters are defined based on three statistical parameters of the surface which include standard deviation of asperity height distribution, average asperity summit curvature and area density of asperities.
