abstract

Large amplitude internal wave solitons, generated by interactions between tidal waves and continental shelf breaks, are found commonly in the continuously stratified oceans. Its impact to the FLNG offloading operations, in both side-by-side and dynamically positioning tandem configurations, has been investigated systematically in this paper. The most severe internal wave soliton from a 3-year current field measurement is used as the base case for the study of a generic FLNG offloading during the soliton passage. The MARIN time domain simulation tool, aNySIM, is extended to model the soliton-induced hydrodynamic loads on both FLNG and LNG carrier. Due to the finite speed of advancing soliton fronts, phase differences occur in the resulting current loads on the vessels. The impact of the soliton on offloading operations is evaluated quantitatively by comparing the simulation results with and without soliton in otherwise identical environmental conditions. The maximum amplitude, advancing speed and heading of an internal wave soliton package are varied to examine its sensitivity to the offloading dynamics.
