abstract

The use of foamed metals for highly effective heat sink design is increasing, but little has been done to quantify the fluid dynamics of impinging round jets on porous media. An understanding of the fluid dynamics is crucial to optimize the eventual heat transfer performance. In this study, smoke-wire flow visualization is employed to investigate the behavior of a round jet issuing from a straight tube and impinging on foamed aluminum porous media used as a heat sink. The porosity of the foamed aluminum porous media is varied and the effect on the flow dynamics of the impinging jet is examined. The effects of jet-to-surface spacing and Reynolds number are explored for unheated porous media.
