A CFD Investigation of Window Cooling for an Optically Accessible Combustion Rig

abstract

Numerical simulation was performed for the window cooling system of a new facility, the High Pressure Optically Accessible Combustion Rig, at Institute for Aerospace Research, National Research Council Canada. The Shear-Stress Transport k-ω two-equation model in FLUENT was used to solve the complex flows. The numerical results revealed that a cooling film was formed along the window glass. However, because of the presence of the bridge blocks the cooling film was not quite uniform. The bridge blocks for the cooling slots induced complex flow patterns and thus reduced the cooling effectiveness for the window. The maximum surface temperature was found to be at the trailing edge of the inner window surface. The cooling flow exiting from the downstream end cooling slot formed a large and strong vortex, which entrained hot air from the combustion air flow and caused the described high surface temperature. At the current flow condition, the maximum value of the temperature on the window surface was slightly higher than the allowable temperature for the designed window material.
