An important feature of phononic band gap structures is the presence of stop bands in the dispersion diagrams. Waves of frequencies within the stop bands do not propagate through the structure. It is possible to design structures, possessing such stop bands, by incorporating appropriately designed resonators within the elementary cell of the (periodic) structure [1]. In particular, this enables one to design a filter for waves of a sufficiently large wavelength using structures whose elementary cells are relatively small in size. The applications may range from acoustic filters to filters of elastic waves in earthquake resistant structures. A possible mechanism is discussed to control the stiffness of resonators, using variable temperature, and hence to alter the position of the stop band in the dispersion diagram. A thermally inhomogeneous resonator is chosen to include elements which buckle under the thermal load combined with mechanical constraints imposed by the surrounding structure. The spectral characteristics of the modified structure are thus changed and this is reflected in the dispersion diagrams.
