abstract

Slip motion with sandwich elastic beams has been exploited for dissipating noise and vibration energy in machines, aero- and hydro-dynamic structures. While most of the original work on the modelling and analysis of the mechanism assume an environment of uniform pressure at the interface, experiments to date have confirmed that this is rarely the case. There have however been recent attempts to relax the restriction of uniform interface pressure to allow for more realistic pressure profiles that are encountered in practice. Even such attempts did not consider thermal and time dependent non uniform interface pressure effects. By employing the laminated beam theory, this paper investigates the effects of temperature variation and time dependent modulation on the non uniform linear interface pressure profile on slip motions in the case of sandwich elastic beams. In particular, closed form analytical expressions and results for dynamic and interfacial slip responses are reported for design analysis.
