abstract

An application of our previously developed cascade structure nonlinear and model predictive thermal dose controller for thermal therapies is presented. The application concentrates on cases where temperature mediated blood flow oscillations are present in a tissue. Simulations using a 1-dimensional model of a tumor were carried out with the objective to deliver a desired thermal dose to the tumor, while maintaining safe levels of temperature in the surrounding normal tissue. While the virtual patient in the simulations was assumed to display perfusion oscillations, the model used for the controller design assumed no knowledge of such a phenomenon. The results demonstrate that a) significant treatment time reductions can be achieved if higher blood flow rates in the normal tissue can be induced, and, b) the cascade controller is robust to the large plant-model mismatch introduced by the perfusion oscillations in the normal tissue. A parametric study showing the dependence of the perfusion oscillation parameters on the treatment time is also presented.
