abstract

Mechanism of the ultra-precision electrical discharge grinding for engineering ceramics is analyzed according to heat source and heat partition. The heat source and heat partition models are established and the numerical calculation is carried on. Two different heat sources have been developed due to the dissimilarity between the grinding heat source and the EDM heat source. The heat of the grinding is mainly made up of ploughing and slipping, while Gaussian heat distribution has been considered due to EDM. Heat model of ultra-precision electrical discharge grinding for engineering ceramics is obtained by using superposition. The heat partition model among engineering ceramics, grinding wheel and dielectric fluid is developed based on temperature field theories and the numerical calculation is carried on. The results show the heat partition varies inside the electrical discharge grinding zone. The grinding wheel and water-based dielectric fluid take away most of the heat, thus can help to get a good surface integrity of engineering ceramics.
