Knowledge of the inherent ability of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) wall to withstand stress — its failure properties — is vital to understanding aneurysm rupture. Given its known heterogeneity, it is conceivable that the failure strength varies regionally within an AAA. Previous reports on failure strength of aneurysmal tissue have confined to specimens obtained from a few select locations (anterior-midsection, mostly). In this work, four AAAs were harvested as a whole from autopsies. From each AAA, numerous specimen strips located at various regions were extracted. The failure tension for each strip was determined by subjecting them to uniaxial extension tests and compiled to study how failure properties are regionally distributed.
