Comparison of Experimental and Numerical Investigations of Conical Shock Wave Interactions in Steady Flows

The interaction of two oblique conical shock waves has been investigated in an axisymmetrical flow. The first one is produced by a conical ring with a sharp leading edge located at the exit of a supersonic nozzle. The second one is generated by a curvilinear cone placed in the test chamber and along the symmetry axis of the nozzle. This flow field is absolutely free of three-dimensional effects. The displacement of the mobile cone leads to an interaction of an oblique shock wave with a diverging curvilinear shock which the strength changes. Recently, the experimental results have shown three different structures of the two shock wave interactions and hysteresis effects between them. A description of these shock wave interactions is obtained by solving numerically the unsteady Euler or Navier-Stokes equations. By comparison with the experimental ones, the results show the important role of viscous effects for a correct description and understanding of these shock interactions.
